PROGRAM DESCRIPTION


The Smart Cities Convergence Master’s Program offers an interdisciplinary educational experience combining theory and practice across a diverse spectrum of design, technology, business and management disciplines applied to smart cities with an opportunity for students to develop and apply real solutions facing today’s cities simultaneously preparing them to be future leaders in the emerging field of smart cities and related industries. Students will be provided with a comprehensive understanding of the technologies, tools and methods transforming cities as smart ecosystems through the study, comparative analysis and project-based application of diverse approaches to the planning, design and operations of cities including IoT, AI, machine learning, neural networks, blockchain, co-design, generative design, big data, data visualization, and simulation within the context of cities as dynamic, adapting, living systems embodied in the notion of cities as living labs.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE


THEORY & PRACTICAL & MULTIDISCIPLINARY

The first semester will provide a broad spectrum of course subjects related to the history, technology, design, planning and management of smart cities that all students will be required to take as foundation modules.


The second semester will allow students to pursue interdisciplinary approaches to solving critical challenges facing cities around the world and adapting these challenges to each unique urban context and city DNA.


The third semester is focused on project-based learning, partnering with cities in both Italy and China to solve real-world challenges by working with government officials, stakeholders and the public. The program will also allow students to be exposed to companies and experts in diverse fields with the potential to build professional relationships and expand their networks.


TARGET STUDENT


The Convergence program is targeted to city managers, designers, engineers, IT and business professionals willing to step out of their comfort zone to think and act in an interdisciplinary way in order to develop new collective models and applications to push the limits of the potential of the convergence of design, technology and business to transform our cities into sustainable, self-regulating ecosystems.  

The program is delivered as an 18-month master’s degree accredited program catered to meet the scheduling requirements of working professionals that would like to further their knowledge base and career with a flexible, agile program format. The program combines a balance of seminars, design studios and labs, individual research, group collaboration and project-based learning delivered both as online courses and on campus workshops in Beijing and Milan and with special project fields trips within China and Europe.


PROGRAME STRUCTURE

 

Duration:15~18 MONTHS


Integration of interdisciplinary education philosophy which using design , technology, business and management disciplines as basic modules.

Teaching form: lectures + workshops
Duration: 54 days (some online courses)

Teaching schedule: 

Phase 1. Lectures, during 2 weekends  (from Friday to Sunday) every month, 27credits

Phase 2.Workshop, one weekend every month (from Friday to Sunday) intensive teaching , 13credits.


The whole process of immersive learning pays attention to the cultivation of core competence

ECTS: 30

Teaching form: practice + writing

Duration: half a year

Teaching schedule:  

Phase 3.Thesis writing, 12 days, 9 credits  

Phase 4. Project practice, 20 days, 21 credits


Take the city as the laboratory practice mode to carry on the real scene training, and establish the network connection with the top talents in various fields

Teaching form: Overseas practice

Duration: 1 week ;7 days

Teaching schedule:  

exchange of Smart city project in Rome and Milan

PRACTICE AND MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE IN SMART CITY


Real estate development investment, government departments, technology companies, consulting companies and others related to smart city.The comprehensive quality and innovation potential are investigated by the way of "application examination - selective admission". Application review includes material review and interview assessment.
